A quick piece about the Strikes of 2023

Hot Strike Summer

Probably the longest I went without working on a show, the WGA Strike may have started in May, but for me, it started in February, when the show I was working on wrapped, and every other show started their “we’re waiting for the strike announcement” messages. An understandable request, but for gig workers like us, it felt like a death sentence.

As a writer, I supported the WGA Strike 100%. I’ve picketing with friends, made new ones, got a lot of steps in, and supported my future union while they protested for 148 days, and have continued my support as the SAG Strike pushes on.

Did I chafe? Yes.

Did I sadly pay $12 at the Warner lot to picket? Also yes.

Did I forget to apply sunscreen? Almost every day.

But did I have fun? Yes! (mostly yes).

When I can, I’ll still be out there supporting SAG. I was a union supporter before, but nothing really makes you appreciate the rules in place to protect workers like us, like fighting on them on the front lines! Let’s hope this doesn’t happen again for a long time, but when it does, I’ll be out there again!
